Chapter Sixteen

Eric dropped into a chair, exhaled slowly, and watched through the open door as Gordon continued to sign documents shoved under his nose by his assistant for another ten minutes.

The man finally walked into the office. “Where is she?”

“God knows. Gordon, what the hell have you dragged me into?”

“I’m sorry. I think we’re only now beginning to get an inkling of what Caleb was up to. We knew he was in contact with Az—”

He thrust a hand out, his palm up. “Please don’t say her name.”

“Quite.” The man nodded and walked around to his chair. “He told us he had access to new magic. It was so strong it was even capable of bringing the Las Vegas wards down.”

The legacy’s jaw dropped. “Wait—that’s what’s been happening in Las Vegas? It was Caleb showing off?”

“The rest of us had no idea he was helping the demon to cross over.”

“What did you imagine were the demon’s reasons for helping you?” He fixed the man with a steely gaze from his white eye.

Gordon seemed momentarily lost for words. “Well, there was some discussion of quid pro quo, of course, but Caleb was handling it—”

“The fact is,” Eric interrupted, “you didn’t care what the price was.”

His companion’s cheeks bloomed red. “Now listen here.”

“I’m not judging you. Having seen who is in the Cabal, I know most of them at least by reputation. There isn’t one of us who wouldn’t murder our grandmother for the kind of power this demon has.”

“Well, when you put it like that—”

“Now, Caleb’s left you—sorry, us—to deal with his mess. He must have had a plan to get rid of her.”

“Get rid of who?” Azatoth asked from the corner of the room.

Gordon froze.

Eric scowled at the man. He turned to the demon, who swung what looked like a manticore tail in circles. “Alexa. It seems she’s interfered with all our plans too many times but we don’t know where she is.”

She smiled and paused long enough for him to get the message that she knew that wasn’t who he’d been talking about. After a moment, she spoke calmly. “Yes, Lexi. I’ve had a short meeting with the mage. It appears this vessel and her mage were hiding secrets. He was holding her memories of her sister. It was a fortuitous meeting for other reasons. You can have the mage. I’m not interested in him. The sister is not to be touched, however. I know where she is but I need another little job done.” She looked at the office door. “Which creature should I command to do it?”

Gordon straightened. “You can command me and I’ll know the right person to take it to.”

Azatoth sat on the edge of his desk, leaned forward, and pinched his cheek. “You are so accommodating.”

Eric wasn’t sure what it was, but when she smiled and became polite, she was at her most terrifying.

The telephone rang and the mage jumped. He picked the receiver up and listened before he turned to Eric. “Young Warren has passed his interview with flying colors.
